Strim, Russia uses Astra to run 4 TV channels

Multiservice is the buzzword of subscriber network operators. The major project of this kind in Russia is the Strim TV. And a part of the service bouquet is the TV broadcasting, and a part of the TV technology there is Aveco automation.

Astra provides here not only the ingest and playout automation, but also the media asset management, archiving and integration of the production workflow.

Astra integrates videoservers Profile, archive Diva, GVG router, logo generators and NLEs.

Aveco delivered fully mirrored Astra, videoserver mirroring feature as well as automatic emergency failover scenarios.

ARD, Germany, broadcasts one main TV channel and nine regional channels under Astra control

ARD, the first German public channel ("Das Erste") broadcasts since the beginning of 2005 from the centralized facility in Frankfurt. The Aveco automation Astra is used by ARD to control nationwide broadcasting of the core TV channel plus nine opt-out TV channels for regional ad insertions.

Astra is responsible for ingest, media management and playout, as well as for controlling the additional services such as VPS, WSS and others.

Astra interfaces to other systems such as D.A.V.I.D., the planning system PLAN1 and the sales system WISOS.

The project focuses on maximum reliability of the transmission. Therefore the automation system is fully mirrored and controls mirrored videoservers, mixers and other techology. Emergency strategies are an important part of the specification, training and handover.

Aveco went a long way on the German market starting with a small system installed five years ago. During the years Aveco has proven to the broadcasters that it's systems and services are worth to consider. Astra at first German public channel confirmed the good reputation Aveco has gained.

Aveco ingest and media management system is used by EuroNews, France

Aveco (automation, media management), Octopus (newsroom system) and SGI (videoservers, storage) provided an integrated solution for digital ingest and news production facilities at EuroNews, France.

Aveco Astra is responsible for controlling the scheduled or manual ingest and file exchange among videoservers, central storage and archive. Aveco configured it's customizable data model to fit the specific needs of EuroNews. The Astra webtools are seamlessly plugged in the Octopus newsroom system to give access to the metadata, to allow for browsing the high resolution files on the PC screen, to do indexing and creating subclips. Aveco and Octopus tools allow also for integrating the Pinnacle NLEs into the workflow.

VIVA TV in Germany has turned to Aveco's automation system Astra for results

Aveco lost the Viva project two and a half years ago against a reputed automation vendor. Since then the vendor was not able to deliver the features Viva has requested.

Aveco was invited to come and do the presentation. During the two days of the onsite preparation we have implemented the interface to their plannig system and to the Pinnacle DekoCast and presented all requested features successfuly to the customer. Among others Astra controlled multiple squeezed pictures, playout of different clips simultaneously in the squeezed windows on single screen, displaying lower thirds in specified timeslots where the text was included in the playlist, and more.

Within six weeks Aveco prepared the specification, delivered the system, customized it according to the requests, trained the crew, and launched on air. Viva is modern music TV with a lot of interactivity. Astra playlists receive the clips winning the votes ten to twenty seconds prior to airing. Viva viewers also are able to create their own jingles at the Viva web site. These jingles will be broadcasted by using the videoserver Aveco Redwood Lite.

After launch we received the following letter from the VIVA TV's Management regarding the implementation of their specific workflow: "We would like to add our full respect and our congratulations regarding the amazing performance of your team and equipment. Without your professional work and responsible engagement this would not have been possible."

IBC 2003

IBC2003 was a very successful show for us, with many visitors, many new customers, old customers returning to expand their on-air AVECO systems, and a good chance for opening new distribution channels.

ASTRA has already proven itself as a reliable, flexible and easy-to-use automation system with a robust foundation running on the real-time operating system QNX and on industrial PC hardware. We discussed several future projects both large and small where the open architecture and versatility of ASTRA proved we have an interesting solution for large installations distributed accross the Internet, centralcasting systems as well as single box solutions.

At our booth at IBC we presented our ASTRA Automation system in a non-single-point-of-failure configuration with web-based services, wide area media management, extended control of the workflow as well as playlist management of 3 on-air channels. All of these features have been installed at our customers' sites and are used on-air.

Our newest product, the videoserver REDWOOD, was presented for a first time to the public. We believe it is the nicest videoserver currently available on the market, and it works well, too.

The message from IBC2003 was very positive. Our existing customers are coming back to us with new projects and are interested in our new products. New prospective customers are discussing their varied needs with us - and we are finding that, after being on-air since 1994, we have solutions ready off-the-shelf!

Thank you all for coming. We are looking forward to implementing the projects that we have discussed.

Aveco at CCBN 2003

Aveco has worked together with the Chinese company Milestone Mediaware to setup AVECO (China) Representative Office. This business entity has started developing the partner and distribution network and this effort resulted in creating a strong partnership with Jetsen, the Chinese system integrator and broadcasting solution provider.

Aveco then displayed it's products - the automation Astra and the videoserver Redwood - at the Jetsen's booth. Jetsen kindly presented Aveco to it's customers and the feedback was very positive.

Aveco has learned about the uniqueness of the Chinese market and prepared the roadmap of adapting the products to fulfil the customers' expectations. Thanks to the flexibility of the Aveco systems and to the experience of Aveco in tailoring the solutions to ever changing requirements of the broadcasters we know that within short period of time we are ready to provide the Chinese customers a solution with both the international experience and local targeted features.

JANG Group - GEO TV

AVECO builds up new TV station, the GEO TV in Pakistan. We deliver the automation system and provide the TV station design and system integration. OCTOPUS Newsroom system is used as well.

The project is challenging - the GEO TV is located in Karachi (Pakistan), while the foreign affairs production studios, the master control and uplink are in Dubai (UAE). The newsroom and automation system thus are distributed across these two cities. The automation also handles the media management between the cities, moving the media files over the Internet from the place of production to Dubai for uplink.

AVECO exhibited at BroadcastAsia2002

We already have very successful installation in Asia - the AAJ TAK, 24hours news channel in India. This has already generated big momentum for us on the Asian market. The exhibition BroadcastAsia2002 was very good opportunity to meet the prospective customers from this part of the world.

We presented the customers all features of the TV station automation system, newsroom automation and the AVECO videoserver.

We exhibited our products with cooperation of our partner for South East Asia - the company Benchmark Microsystems. Together with Octopus newsroom system and the products from the Benchmark's portfolio we setup at the booth fully working newsroom and TV station, from acquisition, through nonlinear editing, production, videoservers, CGs up to multichannel playout and business graphics.

10.4.2002
NAB 2002

We took a part as exhibitors for the first time as a company unknown to the US market and still our booth was busy all the time. It was interesting to meet the American customers and talk about US broadcasting problems. We showed the visitors that our products are strong and mature and we have solutions available which address the range of requests from the legacy environments up to the latest trends.

We presented playout of six TV channels driven by two remote locations as an example of centralcasting approach. We displayed the network transparent solution for multiple control levels, from direct access to devices up to centralized playlist management.

OCTOPUS, our partner company presented the Octopus newsroom system in the next booth, and our automation system was distributed across the booths in the way that the Octopus automation was an integral part of the whole automation solution (and the automation was an integral part of the newsroom, too).

There were runnig two cooperating videoservers, Omneon and SGI.

Several meetings turned out to be real projects and we already approaching some tenders and bid. The future is bright, as usual.
