Looking Back at NAB and What was the “Buzz” at the Show

It all seems more normal now.  We had a successful NAB, and we’ll be back at CABSAT – the second CABSAT during what is still considered a pandemic. That “new normal” is starting to feel like the old normal...finally.

Let’s take a look back at NAB. True, it was smaller than normal, with approximately 56,000 attendees, but those were people that really wanted to be at NAB. Why? Because of all the buzz surrounding the technologies that have come about during the last three years. Conference sessions, journalists, and social media were all on the same topics:

The cloud (how could it not be the big thing to come out of NAB?), with its potential for cost-effectiveness and agility. Production, playout and disaster recovery in the cloud are real (we know, we’ve been doing it for years) – now almost everyone wants to know how to do “the cloud”.

At the same time, it felt as if NAB wanted to illustrate reasons against using cloud services. Or, were any of the NAB exhibitors now reading this article actually satisfied with the quality of the internet connectivity available at the booths?

Then AI – with both today’s AI-empowered MAM systems – like our GEMINI MAM, and the future of AI in creating programs from a production and post production perspective (with human approval, of course).

The third big thing... virtual production. Being used more often in movies and commercials, television program production is looking at this in-camera VFX technology as a way to be more creative, with real time 4K LED screen backgrounds (think shooting inside a car – “the car process” – and seeing the environment outside of the it – with multicam instead of a single camera) or studios with massive LED screens with video plates creating the background outside of windows, to using the LED wall as a virtual set (with no physical sets) that tracks camera motion, all in real time. In the virtual world, if you can think it, you can do it.

That’s a lot of advanced technology.

One final note, if you didn't get to NAB to see our GEMINI MAM, which integrates with a number of AI systems (remember, Aveco is all about choice), and working together with our playout and studio solutions, come visit us at CABSAT. We think you’ll be very impressed by what this new generation of MAM is capable of, as well as how it can positively impact your production workflow. You’ll find us in booth A5-5.

Plus, they’ll be lots of conference sessions at CABSAT as well. Remember that trade shows aren’t just about new products and solutions, they’re about learning.
